🇺🇸 US gov. awards record-breaking workspace marketplace pilots
According to HigherGov, the General Services Administration (GSA) posted an RFP on March 4th to Expand 👇 "implement an enterprise-wide, scalable marketplace solution to optimize its real estate portfolio and streamline the management of federal office space". This week we heard that this contract has been awarded as two 12-month pilots.
As of curation, we have confirmed that two booking platforms are involved. LiquidSpace will be working with Trebellar on their solution in San Francisco. Upflex is leaning on their existing integration partnership with Gospace AI in conjunction with DHC Real Estate Services, a certified veteran-owned small business, for a pilot in Chicago.
This is a developing story, and in many ways would break government contracting records for speed – going from RFP to two pilots in weeks. It does follow/build on previous GSA contracts or flex-forward moves we’ve covered including the flex workspace contract vehicle and the FedCowork pilot. Stay tuned to This Week in Coworking as we continue to cover this story.

👩‍⚖️ An update on the US Gov’s use of flex workspaces
It’s been over three years since the GSA first announced a contract vehicle – essentially Expand 👇 green-lighting five vendors that are approved to bid on flexible workspace contracts for the GSA; and a full year since the US government opened their own network of six coworking spaces that any federal agency employee can access and there’s a lot of data to review.
The only problem? Trying to get those workers to actually check in so they can track how the spaces are being used. The General Accountability Office’s report states that “while the pilot thus far has focused on gathering input from coworking space users, GSA has not developed scalability criteria that would enable it to assess whether a coworking service would succeed in a broader, non-pilot setting.”

🇺🇸 Federal US gov. agencies having a “coworking week” in November.
The GSA will be testing out coworking spaces the week of November 14, and will first roll out the Expand 👇 opportunity in Washington, D.C., Denver, and San Francisco. For this “coworking week,” Federal employees can test out coworking spaces for free and get a glimpse into what coworking would look like for their teams.
Not sure if/how this is related to the GSA + coworking news we shared in W34 of 2021, but an interesting development.
