For over a decade now, Africa has emerged as a fascinating frontier for coworking spaces, businesses, products and innovations.

Michael Aldridge, a visionary entrepreneur and founder of KOFISI, joins Hector Kolonas on the “This Week in Coworking” podcast to shed light on their evolution and the future of workspace solutions on the African continent.

🤩 A massive thanks to essensys who hosted us at their new digs in the new Studio at The Spiral space (by Tishman Speyer) to record this in-person conversation.

A Journey of Transformation

Michael’s journey into Africa’s coworking realm began with a search for dynamic markets around 2012. Astonished by the demographic projections showing an explosive workforce increase by 2030, he set his sights on Africa. “For every three people entering the workforce, one will be African,” Michael noted. This staggering statistic laid the groundwork for KOFISI’s ambitious path in transforming the landscape of office spaces in Africa.

Building from the Ground Up

KOFISI’s first office sprang up in Kenya in 2014, but not without challenges. Michael likened the initial business environment to the UK’s 1980s but with the widespread technology of iPhones. The robust tech at personal disposal contrasted sharply with the inadequate infrastructure. Over time, KOFISI took decisive strides, setting benchmarks such as free coffee and uninterrupted power, advancing the standard of work environments to attract enterprise clients.

Growth and Expansion

As of today, KOFISI boasts 800,000 square feet of office space in eight countries, with ambitious plans for expansion. The strategy zeroes in on large enterprises, offering bespoke hospitality-driven services that enhance productivity and innovation. Michael highlighted, “With this hotelified model, we create the best workday possible.” KOFISI’s pioneering approach has seen their presence spread across Africa and into the Middle East—a testament to the company’s resilient and adaptable growth.

Strategic and Sustainable Vision

Michael places a heavy emphasis on strategic growth and sustainability. KOFISI’s mission centers on job creation and generating societal benefits, which create scaffolding for Africa’s future. The operational focus integrates service, infrastructure, and customer satisfaction—each contributing to profitability and long-term success.

Misconceptions and Realities

Africa, often misunderstood and misrepresented, offers vast potential, especially in flex space. Despite the continent being undersupplied and mispriced in terms of office solutions, KOFISI’s model has thrived by aligning the reality of the market with enterprise demands. “Our journey proves that clients will find you when you deliver a good product,” Michael asserts.

Connecting Through Community

The collaboration between KOFISI and South Africa’s Workshop 17 underscores the community-focused aspect of their initiatives. These partnerships, besides enhancing service quality, bridge gaps by facilitating economic and infrastructural growth.

In closing, Michael Aldridge exemplifies a blend of innovative thinking and entrepreneurial spirit, driving forward a burgeoning industry ripe with opportunities. As Hector alludes, sharing these African success stories internationally can reshape global perceptions and invite further exploration and investment. Together, they plan to amplify such narratives.

“Storytelling about Africa’s coworking potential is just beginning,” Hector asserts, with the commitment to spotlight African trailblazers like Michael and KOFISI. With a strong foundation and strategic foresight, KOFISI stands poised to redefine Africa’s commercial landscape, one workspace at a time.
